Cubans and Guineans celebrate Africa Day

This May 25, the health collaborators and the Diplomatic Mission accredited in Guinea Bissau culminated the celebrations for Africa Day, which included cultural political activities in the different headquarters of the “Raúl Díaz Argüelles” Faculty of Medicine located in the regions of the country.

The central closing ceremony was held with the participation of the Ambassador of Cuba, the Head of the Medical Brigade, the Cuban and Guinean deans of the faculty, as well as a representation of the faculty and students; Representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture also participated.

The cultural part was in charge of the students, who staged, with color and creativity, pictures of the cultural, religious and social traditions of the different ethnic groups that make up the country.

In the final words of the act, the Ambassador, Dr.C Raúl de la Peña Silva, highlighted that Africa Day is a date that reflects the recent history of the African continent, characterized by an interesting speech of unification and recognition of African culture . It meant that Africa is part of the very essence of our country; therefore, there are many reasons that motivate Cubans to commemorate Africa Day.

The deep relations between Cuba and Africa, and our presence on this continent, cannot be understood in their real magnitude without a full awareness of Africa’s contribution to Cuba; He pointed out that this is why Commander in Chief Fidel Castro always emphasized the “moral debt” and the “duty of compensation” that we Cubans have with Africa; debt that the Cuban people learned to settle with their solidarity and internationalism.

He stressed that hundreds of Cuban collaborators have provided their services on this continent, in the sectors of health, education, sports, agriculture and others, and highlighted as an example the Medical Brigade that has been in this Faculty for 36 years, developing a training program of excellence, through which it makes the dreams of young Guineans come true and makes them protagonists of the health system of this brother country.

The Cuban diplomat finally pointed out that Cuba has the firm and unanimous support of the African countries in the fight against the criminal blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States government, and of the African Union in particular, which in its last Assembly Ordinary of Heads of State and Government issued a Resolution urging the United States government to lift the unjustified and long-standing blockade; also expressing its solidarity with the Cuban people. He pointed out that Cuba is extraordinarily grateful for this gesture, and this was reflected in the Central Report of the Communist Party of Cuba to its eighth congress, where special thanks were sent to the African Union for the consistent support to Cuba in this struggle.

The coincidence in the fight against colonialism between the nascent African States and the Cuban Revolution was the starting point of a relationship between brothers that today, in the midst of a complex economic, political and health panorama, is consolidated.
