Baskour©: As part of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) project, a reforestation operation was held on the morning of Saturday, August 23, 2025, in the commune of Baskour©. 680 seedlings were planted during this activity under the chairmanship of the President of the special delegation (PDS) of the commune, Ousmane Ilboudo.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the species planted on August 23, 2025, in the villages of Oualgo and Komsilga, include the n©r©, the baobab, the acacia nilotica, and the cac©drat. In Komsilga, 272 plants were planted, including 110 baobabs, 110 n©r© trees, and 52 cac©drat trees. Meanwhile, in Oualgo, 408 plants including 160 baobabs, 140 n©r©s, 68 acacia nilotica, and 40 cac©drats were planted. This activity follows an initial reforestation operation which took place on August 18, 2025, in the village of Nakaba.
The initiative was welcomed by members of the Village Development Committees (CVD) of the villages concerned. The president of the CVD of Oualgo, Souleymane Diand©, expressed his satisfaction with the reforestation in his locality. He noted the benefits of the plants, which include medicinal properties and uses in cooking.
Baskour©’s environmental technical officer, Fran§oise Zoungrana, outlined the preparation stages for the activity. The process involved site reconnaissance to identify denuded areas, staking out trees with villagers, digging holes, and planting seedlings. Zoungrana emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent animals from uprooting the plants and expressed optimism about their growth given favorable rainfall conditions.
President of the special delegation, Ousmane Ilboudo, encouraged sustainable investment in restoring the plant cover of the commune. He highlighted the support from the PGPC REDD+ project, which finances the activities. Ilboudo also stressed the importance of protecting the plants from animals and mentioned that protective measures, such as wire mesh fences and management committees in each village, have been implemented. The environmental department will provide ongoing technical support to ensure the success of the reforestation efforts.
