The Cuban Ambassador participates in the XIV National Scientific Conference of the “Raúl Díaz Argüelles García” Faculty of Medicine in Guinea Bissau

This Saturday, May 7, the XIV Scientific Conference of the “Raúl Díaz Argüelles García” Faculty of Medicine was held, chaired by the Ambassador of Cuba, Dr. Raúl de la Peña Silva. Also present were Dr. Milagros Valdespino Argudín, head of the Medical Brigade; the WHO representative in Guinea Bissau; the Guinean dean of the faculty, Dr. Mario Gómes; the Cuban Dean, Dr. Quenia González Guerra and the directors of the main hospitals in Bissau.

The scientific conference began with a Keynote Conference on “Where we come from and where we are going in sepsis”, given by the MSc. Dr. Pedro Rafael Casado Méndez, which gave rise to several interventions and questions on the subject.

With the participation of all of the University Headquarters of the faculty in the different regions of the country, students from different years of the course and Guinean health professionals, a fruitful day of science was developed, where students and professors presented 27 works, results of research that responds to problems identified in the different health areas where they provide their care services.

The Cuban diplomat and the head of the Medical Brigade toured the different rooms where the commissions met and were able to assess the scientific rigor of the papers presented and the importance of the studies, which provide concrete data in order to improve the health of the population. Guinean.

In the conclusions, the Ambassador reiterated that scientific research is an essential component in the training of professionals and expressed the need to disseminate the results derived from the work so that they are known by Guinean health personnel and suggested the need that the faculty has a scientific journal where these results are published. He congratulated the participants who presented their work as well as the tutors in the case of the students.

To conclude, he commented on the results achieved in the confrontation with Covid-19 by Guinea Bissau and Cuba, meaning the obtaining, by Cuban scientists, of 3 vaccines and 2 vaccine candidates, the latter being in different stages of their clinical trials for submit them for approval by the regulatory body. This has allowed Cuba to be one of the countries that has a higher percentage of its population immunized in Latin America and the world, despite the strict economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US government on the country. He also denounced the unjust exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the next Summit of the Americas to be held in Los Angeles, United States, from June 8 to 10.
